Drought Monitor

The Drought Monitor is updated each Thursday. The map below was updated on Thursday, October 12. Nothing much changed from last week’s update, though areas around Chattanooga did improve.

On This Day  

1880 – A violent early season blizzard raked Minnesota and the Dakotas. Winds gusted to 70 mph at Yankton, South Dakota, and snow drifts 10 to 15 feet high were reported in northwest Iowa and southeast South Dakota. Saint Paul, Minnesota, reported a barometric pressure of 28.65 inches on the 16th. Railroads were blocked by drifts of snow which remained throughout the severe winter to follow. Gales did extensive damage to ship on the Great Lakes.

1966 – Iowa experienced its worst late season tornado of record. In just one minute a twister tore through the town of Belmond leveling 75 percent of the businesses, and 100 homes, causing more than eleven million dollars damage.

Eclipse

If you get a chance, check out the partial solar eclipse happening right now. It keeps going until about 1:30. It’s a challenge with the clouds but I’ve seen some good stuff. I’m wearing the glasses I had for the eclipse we had in 2017. Make sure you don’t look directly at the sun, as it could damage your eyes.

On This Day  

1909- An F2 tornado strikes Coffee County, passing south of Wartrace and Manchester, and ending near Hillsboro. Six persons are injured. Many barns are destroyed. Overall, five tornadoes strike Middle Tennessee.

1987 – Sixteen cities, mostly in the Appalachian Region, reported record low temperatures for the date. Record lows included 43 degrees at Lake Charles Louisiana, 35 degrees at Augusta, Georgia, and 27 degrees at Asheville, North Carolina. Gale force winds buffeted the Carolina coast. Light snow fell across parts of Wyoming, Colorado, and western South Dakota. 

Tropics

The system in the Gulf has moved inland. There are no other threats to the U.S. over the next five days.

2000- Dry weather continues. Despite at start of 38 degrees, the afternoon temperature at Nashville soars to 81. The high temperature hits 75 at Crossville, despite having dropped to 35 for a morning low.
