A Colder & Drier Pattern Develops…for now.
The first day of the new year is starting off noticeably colder than the last day of 2023! We reached into the lower 50s for highs on Sunday. We’ll be nearly 20 degrees colder today.
Temps slowly rebound for Tueday, before another system throws some clouds our way. That system is a weak area of low pressure along the northern Gulf Coast. It may send some a few flurries or sprinkles our way, with best chance for that coming for those of you south of Crossville, with no impacts expected.
Sunshine returns for Thursday and that dry weather will persist through Friday, though clouds will beging to increase once again as we end out the week. Those clouds are ahead of a powerful Gulf storm system that will be moving in for the weekend. The track of that low will need to be monitored closely for the risk of wintry precip. Stay tuned.

1710 – Paris merchant Jean Marius obtains 5-year royal privilege for his invention of a folding umbrella – first in Europe.
1987 – A winter storm brought rain and snow and high winds to the Southern and Middle Atlantic Coast Region. The storm, which occurred in a period of unusually high astronomical tides, produced a tide of 9.4 feet at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina! This was the highest tide since Hurricane Hazel in 1954, which caused a total of 25 million dollars damage in South Carolina.

The jetstream is a “river of wind” found at about 30,000 feet. The brighter reds and whites represent the fastest winds. There are two main jetstreams to watch this time of year. There’s the polar jet to the north and the subtropical jet to the south. This map begins this morning at 6:00 a.m. and moves in six-hour increments.

Percent of Tennessee in drought conditions remains at 93%. However, the percentage of the state in extreme drought rose from 29% to 47%. Drought conditions continue to worsen.
