Thursday Evening Wx Update

Update Issued June 26 at 5:20 pm

I’ve been tracking a storm that has been moving toward Crab Orchard. I started tracking this when it developed near Oak Ridge, and I thought it might fall apart, but it has held together well. Now, it’s approaching the eastern border of Cumberland County. Normally, storms to our east move toward Knoxville. However, the pattern today is steering storms from east to west (backwards to normal motion).

As you can see on radar, the storm is very intense. It could even go briefly severe. It’s just an isolated summer storm but, much like yesterday’s storm, it is producing lots of lightning, gusty winds, small hail, and heavy rainfall. This storm will likely impact eastern Cumberland County over the next hour or so. Crab Orchard, Westel, and Grassy Cove will get it first. Then it may impact other parts of southern Cumberland County if it holds together.

There is another smaller storm developing ahead of this one and some of you are likely already getting rain from that cell.

Remember, summer storms can be intense. If you can hear it thunder, you’re close enough to be struck by lightning.

Fireball in the Sky

Update Issued June 26 at 2:25 pm

There are numerous reports of a fireball that streaked across the sky today around noon. The fireball was moving southeast. There are indications that it may have actually made it to the ground in South Carolina. The fireball (meteor) was captured on numerous cameras, dash cams, etc. It was even detected on satellite!

While such events likely occur daily, one this bright and over such populated areas (Atlanta included) make it quite the story! There’s no telling how many of these land in our oceans without being noticed.

I’m starting to get messages from folks on the plateau who say they saw it. It was apparently visible from all over the Southeast.

The photo below was taken near Macon Georgia by Josh Grant. Can you imagine how bright this would have been in the night?

It was even seen on satellite (bright white spot you see)

There are now reports of some roof damage in Henry County, Georgia.

It’s especially interesting to me because I saw the best “shooting star” I’ve ever seen a couple nights ago. It was incredibly bright and was mostly green in color as it seemed to skip across the sky, brightening with every skip. I literally gasped out loud. lol

Keep looking up! You never know what you might see!

MM’s Thursday 5-Day

June 26, 2025

Morning shower and storm activity to out south should keep our temps a bit cooler today than they were yesterday, especially with a bit of an increase in cloud cover. That should keep us below heat advisory criteria, though it will still be plenty hot and we need to be safe in the heat. Much of this morning activity is moving away from the area but we could still see some development this morning. As with each day this week, though, the better risk for showers and storms will come in the afternoon and evening. Any storm that develops can be quite intense.
