A beautiful moon!

The moon is gorgeous this evening. Step out and take a look if you can.

As many of you may know, Astronaut Jim Lovell passed away yesterday. As you look up at that moon, you might recall that Lovell was one of three astronauts to be the first humans to see the far side of the moon (Apollo8). They also took the first picture of an earthrise. It was Christmas Eve 1968.

Lovell, upon witnessing the earthrise, read from Genesis. “And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.” For Lovell, it was an image that changed our world forever. He put his thumb against the window and the whole world disappeared behind it. It was the most moving experience of his life.

Lovell would also be chosen for Apollo 13. He nearly lost his life on that mission, as many of you all know that story. However, he helped get them back home and ended up living a long life, passing away at the age of 97.

Enjoy that beautiful view of the moon tonight!
