Humberto Becomes a Cat 5

Good Saturday evening, everyone! It’s an interesting day in the weather world. Hurricane Humberto has just strengthened into the seasons second category 5 hurricane, the most powerful category of hurricanes that we have. The storm is expected to increase in strength overnight, with winds possibly topping 170 mph at its strongest point. Of the three hurricanes that have formed this season, two have become cat 5s, while the other became a cat 4. Remarkable, indeed.

The season with the most cat 5s was the 2005 Hurricane Season. There were four cat 5s in that season. If you recall, that was a record year for hurricanes, with one of those being Katrina. To have so few hurricanes so far this year, and two of them be cat 5, is rather remarkable.

Humberto will remain at sea but it will have an interesting impact on the U.S., as it turns out. Since Humberto has become so powerful, it will have even more influence on future Tropical Storm/Hurricane Imelda. In fact, it now looks as if Imelda will turn out to sea before making landfall in the Carolinas. This also means the chance for rain for us from that system has decreased. Future model trends will be monitored closely to see if today’s model guidance is repeated tomorrow.

There remains a concern for inland flooding for Georgia and the Carolinas from Imelda and those folks are monitoring that risk very closely.

As you can see below, Hurricane Humberto was looking quite impressive just before the sun set on the storm.

Humberto’s influence on Imelda will be noticed, steering the storm out to sea just in time!
