Friday Evening Update: Frost and Fire

Issued Friday evening, March 27, 2026

This is a special update concerning frost and fire for Saturday. After the weather we’ve had this month, you’re surely not surprised by that sentence. lol

As expected, precip has been very light today and consisted mostly of drizzle and sprinkles. We sure could use some rain and we still have an opportunity for better showers. In fact, at this hour a band of showers is moving southeast across the plateau. That band currently stretches from Livingston to Jamestown. Rainfall amounts will be very light with this activity. That rain should be out of here by 8:00 pm, though areas of drizzle could persist through midnight.

Widespread frost continues to look likely by Saturday morning. The only saving grace could come from stubborn cloud cover. Looking at the latest satellite trend, I’d say we have about a 70% chance that skies will clear by daybreak Saturday. Those clearing skies would lead to widespread frost. IF the clouds are more stubborn and get hung up on the plateau, frost would be much more limited.

If you have anything that is sensitive to frost you’ll need to make sure it is protected tonight.

The good news is that winds switch to the south tomorrow night, which will likely spare us a second frosty night. So, tonight may be the only night you worry about frost for the next week.

The second threat we face on Saturday is wildfire. Conditions on Saturday will be favorable for wildfires. Very low humidity (get ready for chapped lips) and breezy conditions will create conditions favorable for fires. Humidity values Saturday afternoon may drop as low as 15-20%. Hold off on doing any outdoor burning and be safe with anything that might make a spark and start a fire. Drought conditions over much of the plateau will only enhance the threat.

You all take care and stay safe.

March winds blowing and blowing and blowing…..

And when those winds are southerly, as they will be today, they are warm. When they switch to the north, as they will tomorrow evening, those winds are colder. In fact, frost is likely by Saturday morning (and again Sunday morning).

The cold front passing through Friday afternoon will bring a chance for showers. Right now, rainfall amounts look to be in the 0.25 – 0.50 inch range. A rumble of thunder can’t be ruled out but looks unlikely.

The weekend is looking dry, with sunny skies. Mornings will be cool and crisp, while afternoons will be warm and breezy.
