Any storm that develops will be capable of deadly cloud-to-ground lightning, a damaging wind gust, small hail, and torrential rainfall. Always keep an eye to the sky if you’re out and about during the afternoons and evenings.

Tropics
The system in the Gulf continues to slowly organize and will likely become our next named storm of the 2020 season. That storm would by Hanna and is headed to the coast of Texas. The storm could make impact as a tropical storm by the end of this week. Heavy rainfall would be the main threat.
Farther east, we have Tropical Storm Gonzalo, with winds of 45 mph. This is one to watch. Some models want to strengthen the storm, others want to keep it weaker. The National Hurricane Center has said that this storm has an unusually high level of unpredictability. It is a small storm and small storms tend to strengthen and weaken more rapidly than larger systems (they also like to surprise us!). Stay tuned.

Wx Hazards Across the Nation
Severe storms and heavy rainfall will threaten a large piece of real-estate today from Virginia to New York state. The threat for tornadoes is highest across southeast New York, stopping just short of New York City. Heavy rainfall will also be a concern from the southern Appalachians to southern Pennsylvania, mainly from afternoon storms that could produce torrential rainfall. I should note that a tornado threat may also evolve today across southern Nebraska. Meanwhile, the wildfire danger increases across southern Nevada, and an area of low pressure organizes in the Gulf.

So far, this map looks good. However, a tropical system in the Gulf may be threatening the eastern coast of Texas and that could change this map for that area.
Records
A lightning strike hit a herd of sheep in Wasatch National Forest in Utah on this day in 1918. The strike killed all 504 sheep, which had huddled together during the storm. The electricity simply transferred from one sheep to another. They were all killed instantly.

I shared this on Facebook last night but I’ll share it with you all too. I’m still learning lightning photography, but I was able to capture this strike in Fentress County yesterday evening. Always be careful around that lightning, folks. These summer storms really know how to put down the strikes!
NASA Nerdology
Check out this sunset…….on Mars! This was shot as the sun set over Gale Crater, Mars. I don’t know about you, but I think Earth has Mars beat when it comes to stunning sunsets. (ha)
