Threats

Be safe in the heat and humidity. Drink lots of water and stay in the shade. Also, make sure those outdoor pets have fresh water and shade.

Any storm that develops in our heat and humidity this week will be capable of a damaging wind gust, torrential rainfall, small hail, and deadly cloud-to-ground lightning. Keep an eye to the sky if you’re out and about this afternoon/evening.

Yesterday’s National High and Low Temperature

High: 123 at Death Valley, California

Low: 26 at Peter Sinks, Utah

Tropics

The tropics are getting active. These two areas had only a slim chance of development yesterday. Now, they have better than 40% chances of development. The one closest to us, threatening the Gulf, should continue on a westward track toward Texas. I’ll keep you posted!

Today’s

Wx Hazards Across the Nation

Heavy rainfall threatens multiple areas. The first area is across the Virginias. Another area stretches from near St. Louis, Missouri to Indianapolis, Indiana. Another area can be found across northern Wisconsin and northern Michigan. Farther west, severe storms threaten eastern Colorado with damaging winds and hail.

Tomorrow’s

Wx Hazards Across the Nation

Severe storms will threaten portions of the East Coast, stretching from near Virginia Beach to New York City. A bit of a wildfire danger is reintroduced to southern Nevada.

Thursday’s

Wx Hazards Across the Nation

Perhaps a quieter day, though all eyes will be on that area of low pressure in the Gulf.

Records

On this day in 1994 two people were hanging gutters on a house in Crossville when lightning struck. Both people were injured by the lightning.

If you’re close enough to hear thunder, you’re close enough to be struck.

Long Range Outlook

Hotter and drier weather may settle in for the ending of July. We’ll see if the tropics have any say in this. Any tropical development could totally change this extended outlook.
