Today’s Stats

Almanac for Yesterday

On This Day in Wx History
1989 – Hurricane Hugo quickly lost strength over South Carolina, but still was a tropical storm as it crossed into North Carolina, just west of Charlotte, at about 7 AM. Winds around Charlotte reached 69 mph, with gusts to 99 mph. Eighty percent of the power was knocked out to Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. Property damage in North Carolina was 210 million dollars, and damage to crops was 97 million dollars. The strongest storm surge occurred along the southern coast shortly after midnight, reaching nine feet above sea level at ocean Isle and Sunset Beach. Hugo killed one person and injured fifteen others in North Carolina.
Yesterday’s National Temperature Extremes
High: 108° at El Centro & Palm Springs, California
Low: 19° at Peter Sinks, Utah
Tropics
The tropics remain active but the only area of interest to the US is the system that will likely become Tropical Storm Sam today. That system is expected to evolve into a major hurricane by Monday night. Hopefully, the storm will curve on out to sea, but it certainly bears watching.

Sun & Moon

Today’s Tennessee Weather
Fall has certainly arrived in the South! After some patchy morning fog, look for abundant sunshine and pleasant afternoon high temps. Much of the state will be in the mid to upper 60s for much of the day.

Tonight’s Tennessee Weather
Some might classify tonight’s low temps as “chilly.” Under starry skies and a nearly-full moon, overnight lows will fall into the 40s across the state. Watch for some patchy fog by daybreak.

Tomorrow’s Tennessee Weather
More sunshine awaits us for Friday. Afternoon highs will be a bit warmer than on Thursday, but continued pleasant. Much of the state will see highs climb to near 70 degrees, with West Tennessee climbing into the mid to upper 70s.

Meteorologist Mark Pro
The latest newsletter has been released for this week, featuring topics on Hurricane Hugo and the mysterious noctilucent clouds.
Coming in October, a kid’s science newsletter will be included with the MeteorologistMarkPro subscription! This has been requested many times over the past few years and by October it will be a reality! I’m so excited to be adding this to the growing list of products offered by the Pro subscription! October’s issue is looking really cool!

Special Note
Many of you know that I mentor in the Kids on the Rise program in Cumberland County. I have two teenage boys and one them lost the grandmother who was raising him this past weekend. She passed away from covid. We will be honoring her life at Liberty Baptist Church on Saturday, Sept. 25th, at 11:00 for anyone who is interested in coming to that service. Lunch will be provided afterwards for those who are interested. We want to celebrate the life of Thelma Haney, while showing Michael (and his sister Abby) how very much they are loved and supported. I am also very glad to say that they have both since been placed (together) with an absolutely wonderful foster family right here in Cumberland County. Prayers answered, for sure!
