7:00 pm Thurs Wx Update

Next update will be when the front is closing in on the plateau.

Summary

The front is closing in on the Nashville area at this hour. Everything is timing out as expected. The front has crossed much of West TN, with temps rapidly dropping through the teens. TDOT road maps show travel slowing rapidly on area roadways and interstates out that way.

Conditions will rapidly go downhill when the front arrives, with dense fog, heavy bursts of snow, and wind gusts to 40 mph all being expected. It is advised that everyone be home by 8:00 pm or as soon thereafter as possible.

Currrent Conditions

Winter Storm Warning in effect (per NWS Nashville)

Wind Chill Warning goes into effect at 10:00 (per NWS Nashville)

Winds are beginning to pick up.

Widespread rain showers are developing across Middle TN, moving east.

HRRR

The latest HRRR model is showing the progression of the front nicely. The front is through Nashville at 8:00, closing in on the plateau by 9:00, and completely across Cumberland and Fentress counties by 11:00. The HRRR is picking up on the fact that the front may slow as it comes up the western edge of the plateau, as I’ve talked about in previous posts. That slowing will prolong snowfall along the western edge of the plateau (Mayland-Monterey-west of Jamestown) and lead to higher snowfall potential there.

Around one inch of snow is possible areawide, with some locations picking up two inches, especially on the western edge of the plateau and north of Jamestown. Isolated locations (mainly in those same areas) could pick up a bit more. Widespread “one inch or less” may prove to be common for central and eastern Cumberland County.

Keep in mind that while this model is doing great, it’s not perfect. These times could change a bit as the front comes across Middle TN.
