Weather Summary

After some morning showers and drizzle, skies will remain mostly cloudy for much of the day. A chance of showers re-enters the forecast tonight, but temps will stay above freezing. The only exception might be to colder spots across northern Fentress County, where some light icing could occur.

On Tuesday, rain chances increase and, as temps fall Tuesday night, the rain will begin mixing with and changing to light freezing rain and sleet. This wintry precip will lead to the potential for hazardous roads across the area late Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Total ice accumulations are expected to stay at or under one tenth of an inch.

Rain continues Wednesday night but temps will stay above freezing. That rain moves out on Thursday before the coldest air arrives. That will leave us with only a chance of snow flurries Thursday night, as it looks right now.

Stay tuned for forecast updates.

Hourly Temp & Precip Forecast

From 9:00 a.m. this morning to midnight.

Impact Maps

This map shows the worst-case scenario for Tuesday morning ice that could cause travel troubles. The freezing line is shown in red. Anyone north of that line could be at risk for some slick spots on area roads, especially in colder spots. Most guidance continues to suggest the 32-degree line will stay closer to the Kentucky border on the Cumberland Plateau, but that line could drift south, as shown below. Anyone with travel plans to Nashville should be advised that travel troubles could await you there, as they could be north of that freezing line and in the freezing rain threat.

Many more of us are risk for freezing rain last Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. The 32-degree line drifts much farther south, putting more of us at risk for hazardous roads. The timeframe for the greatest risk from ice is looking like midnight Tuesday to around 10:00 a.m. Wednesday. Anyone with travel that takes you west on Interstate 40 should be advised that travel could be treacherous all along I-40 from Cumberland County westward. Stay tuned for timing updates.

Chance For A Snow Day

The chance for a snow day has increased to 60%. As more data comes in today, this chance may certainly increase. Stay tuned!

Forecast Rainfall

Total forecast rainfall through Friday. Anywhere from 1-2 inches of rainfall is expected, with the higher totals being south of I-40 and the lower totals being closer to the Kentucky border.
