Special Friday Night Update

Saturday night will be a …….

for the possibility of accumulating snowfall.

Weather Summary

An area of low pressure will move along the northern Gulf Coast on Saturday and throw clouds our way. Those clouds may thicken enough to produce an isolated shower during the day. Overnight, rain and wind begin to increase as the Gulf low intensifies. Winds could gust to 20-25 mph.

As that low strengthens, it will pull cold air down from the atmosphere above. This is called dynamic cooling. Rather than pull cold air in from the north, it will pull cold air from the sky above. This means we can’t track the cold temps as they move in…because they’ll be moving down (ha). So, we’ll see a changeover to snow long before temps drop to freezing here at the surface, especially since it will be so much colder up in the sky.

As snow falls, the temp will drop. Will we drop to 32 degrees? It looks like we will. Will we stay there long? That’s the big question. A lot of snow will likely fall from the sky, but surface temps may struggle to fall to and stay at or below freezing for the snow to accumulate.

If snow falls hard enough, it will stick regardless of surface temps. This is a wet snow and wet snows stick a lot easier than the dry powdery snows we sometimes get.

Main roads should stay alright, unless snows falls hard and fast. Most accumulation should stay on grassy areas.

Please note that if the low pressure strengthens, we’ll get heavier snow. Stay tuned.

VLOG Summary

Radar Model

This model runs from 6:00 pm Friday to noon on Saturday. Notice the general trend of snow developing along the Cumberland Plateau. You may notice the model says 3 inches, but that is how much could fall…not how much will stick to the ground.

Temp & Precip Graph

This temp and precip graph begins at noon Saturday and ends at 9:00 a.m. Sunday. Notice how close to freezing temps are forecast by some of the models to be. If these temps are a degree or two colder, we could see more significant snowfall accumulation.

Weather Map for Saturday

Snowfall Chances

Subject to change significantly in either direction.

Subject to change significantly in either direction.

Chance for a SnowDay

This remains unchanged. There may be a concern for refreezing Sunday night, but that depends heavily on how much snow falls and how long it holds on during the day Sunday. Do your homework, kids, but keep the faith (ha).
