Special Wed Afternoon Update

Strong to severe thunderstorms continue to look like a threat this evening and overnight. The first threat could come in the 6:00-9:00 timeframe. A second threat could arrive after midnight in the 2:00-5:00 a.m. timeframe.

All modes of severe weather continue to look possible, with straight-line winds being the main hazard. If we get high winds, trees could easily uproot in our wet soils. It’s best to prepare once again for power outages, just in case.

Stay tuned for any timing updates to storm arrival times.

MM’s Concerns

It continues to look like we should be weather-aware after 5:00 this evening. In other words, start checking for forecast updates and glancing at that radar from time to time after 5:00. I’ll be up all night or until the threat has passed.

Storm Prediction Center (SPC) Outlook for tonight

This the latest update released in the past hour. We remain outlooked in the slight risk but the enhanced risk is a bit closer than in past outlooks. The slight risk is level 2 out of 5 on the threat scale. The enhanced risk is level 3 out of 5 and can be seen around the Nashville area and down into northern Alabama.

If you notice how the threat area arches southeast….it’s not out of the question that the worst of these storms could turn hard enough to the southeast to miss our area. We can hope for that, but we need to be prepared for rough weather if they don’t turn sharp enough.

Short-Term Model data for this evening and tonight

This latest model run starts at 5:00 pm this evening and ends at 4:00 a.m. in the morning. Don’t focus too much on timing, as that can easily change with these systems (they speed up and slow down). The focus should be on the trend….two distinct rounds of storms, with one coming this evening and the other after midnight. The one after midnight may pose the greatest severe weather risk.

Keeping You Updated

Those of you who have been with me any amount of time know that I’ll be up until the threat has passed. I’m your only local meteorologist for Cumberland or Fentress county and I take that very, very seriously. I’ll let you know if there’s anything at all you need to know about coming our way.

Prepare for power outages and make sure you know your severe weather plan. Remember, you can always get severe weather tips at https://meteorologistmark.com/severe-weather-safety/

Keep up with power outages at https://meteorologistmark.com/severe-weather-safety/

You can download the Meteorologist Mark app in the Android store, or follow the blog to get updates sent to your email.

Make sure your weather radios are working BEFORE the storms get close. Go ahead and check those and make sure they’re turned on and working. Make sure the batteries are good, as well. Weather radios are a GREAT resource to have for severe weather warnings (the best resource, actually!). But, make sure you have multiple ways to get warnings. I recommend the Cumberland County EMA app, seen below.

I’ll be tracking it all! Look for another special update later this evening.

You call have a good evening.

Proudly offering weather support to emergency services!
