An Active Winter Pattern Emerges

High temps on Sunday reached into the low 50s. Although it was windy, it was the warmest day for at least the next seven days.

Clouds will thicken up tonight with a disturbance that is trailing a cold front. That could squeeze out a few flurries overnight and into the morning. While you won’t notice any impacts from snow flurries, you will notice the impact of falling temps! Monday will be noticeably colder than Sunday.

By the middle of the week, a weak Gulf low will develop and move along the northern Gulf Coast. This system is weak and several hundred miles to our south. Both of those factors will mean that moisture will be limited in our area from this storm system. Still, there is reason to believe that we may see some isolated showers on Wednesday and some isolated snow showers Wednesday night. This system is unlikely to have adverse impacts on our area. As always, I’ll keep an eye on that snow shower potential.

By the end of the week, a more powerful Gulf storm system is expected to develop and move our way. This system could bring rain, snow, or a variety of both to our region, depending on the track and the availability of cold air. I’ll keep a very close eye on this sytem and keep you updated as we go through the week.

Pictured below is the current forecast tracks of the Wednesday night system and the weekend system. Incidentally, a track between those two tracks shown is typically our favored storm track for accumulating snow. If the weekend storm tracks farther north, we’ll get plain rain. If it tracks farther south, we could get a variety of wintry precip or even accumulating snow. As more data comes in the next couple of days, a better understanding of this storm system will evolve. Stay tuned.

Two times to watch will be Wednesday night (low to no impact) and Friday night (higher impacts possible).

This Week’s Jetstream Forecast

The jetstream is a “river of wind” found at about 30,000 feet. The brighter reds and whites represent the fastest winds. There are two main jetstreams to watch this time of year. There’s the polar jet to the north and the subtropical jet to the south.

An active jetstream is expected as we go through the week and could spin up a strong Gulf storm system by the coming weekend. I’ll keep an eye on it!

Drought Monitor

The Drought Monitor is updated each Thursday. Drought conditions will worsen across the state in this week’s update. We are now more than 7 inches below normal and we will likely approach the 8 inch mark within the next week.

Have a great day and keep lookin’ up!

A Sunny & Windy Sunday

A nice Sunday is in store for the plateau, though it will be windy. Hold onto your hats if you’re out and about. Today will be the warmest day the week ahead, by far. That wind is blowing in a dry cold front late tonight that could squeeze out a few flurries tonight and in the morning across the plateau. No impacts are expected. It will be noticeably colder for the first day of the new year.

Temps slowly rebound for Tueday, before another system throws some clouds our way. That system is a weak area of low pressure along the northern Gulf Coast. It may send some light precip our way that could be a mix of rain and snow. I’m not expecting any impacts, but I’ll keep an eye on it.

Sunshine returns for Thursday and that dry weather will persist through Friday. Another storm system is worth watching for Friday night into the weekend. Stay tuned.

Waking up to a very light dusting of snow!

Morning of Dec 30, 2023. Photos: By a happy Meteorologist Mark 🙂

An Active Pattern Continues

After a few lingering flurries this morning, we’ll see mostly cloudy and chilly conditions continue for our Saturday.

The coming week will feature an active pattern. Dry conditions continue for our Sunday, though we will see a nice rebound in temps by Sunday afternoon. Clouds thicken up Sunday night and those clouds may drop a sprinkle or snow flurry late in the night and into Monday morning as a front passes through. That front leaves us very chilly again for Monday, before temps rebound a bit by Tuesday afternoon. Yet another system threatens to bring precip to the area Wednesday and Wednesday night, though much of that may stay south of us. Details are unclear at this point, but wintry precip can’t be ruled out. Yet another system may threaten to bring precip next weekend and wintry precip cannot be ruled out with that system either. An active pattern has developed across our region! Stay tuned for all the latest!

Friday Night Update: Winter Wx Advisory

Friday Night Update Issued December 29, 2023

Be sure to download the free Android or Apple app!

Radar sponsored by Creative Compassion (https://ccihomes.org/)

A Winter Weather Advisory is in Effect for Friday Night and Saturday Morning

Winter Weather Advisory Now In Effect

The counties included in the advisory are shown on the map below.

Winter Weather Advisory for Tonight and Saturday Morning

The forecast remains on track, with no major changes anticipated.

The winter weather advisory for the Cumberland Plateau is now officially in effect. That advisory began at 6:00 p.m. and is set to expire at 6:00 a.m. Saturday. The NWS has stated that the advisory will be extended on into the morning hours if needed.

The forecast continues to look on track, with most of us standing a really good chance for a dusting to a quarter of an inch of snow, especially on grassy and elevated surfaces. Others may see up to one half inch, and isolated areas may approach or even slightly exceed one inch. Slick spots on some roadways are possbile, especially on bridges and overpasses, so drive with care. This continues to look like a low impact winter weather event. Disruptions to power are not expected, nor are major disruptions to travel.

Incidentally, some of you have been following me on Facebook and know that I ordered a snow machine that I had hoped would be here in time for Christmas. It finally came today…with actual snow on the way. LOL I have a feeling I’ll get a lot of use out of this thing. haha

You all take care and stay warm! If you don’t hear anything else from me tonight you know I’ll be back in the morning with the usual morning forecast. Plus, I’ll be keeping you posted on an interesting system for the middle of next week. Thanks for trusting me with your weather!
