An Active Radar This Fri Afternoon

Special Update Issued Friday, June 6 at 12:25 pm

Radar is getting very active across Middle TN this afternoon. If you have outdoor plans this afternoon and evening, keep an eye on the radar. Also, make sure you have easy access to adequate shelter, just in case you need it. It won’t rain all afternoon and evening in one place, but there will definitely be scattered showers and storms across the area.

One of the storms just went severe weather for Carthage. That storm is moving east toward Cookeville. This just goes to show that the storms this afternoon can certainly become severe.

Don’t forget the flash flood and lightning threats with these storms. With this humid airmass, torrential rainfall is likely with stronger storms.

A wider view of radar shows even more storms developing in West TN and a big cluster of storms coming out of southeast Missouri into TN and KY. The Storm Prediction Center will likely issue a severe t-storm watch soon for West TN and western KY. We’ll track those as they move east this afternoon. If they continue to intensify, this could pose a greater risk for severe weather for portions of the plateau this evening. I’ll keep a close eye on that!

You all stay weather aware, especially if you have outdoor activities planned this afternoon and evening.

Storms look to threaten a bit earlier than I expected, so I adjusted the threat timeframe from 3:00-midnight, to 2:00 – midnight. Nothing else has changed from this morning’s update.

Thursday Night Update on Friday’s Storms

Issued June 5 at 8:15 pm

The forecast continues to indicate numerous showers and storms developing Friday afternoon and evening. It won’t rain everywhere all the time, but scattered showers and storms are very likely. Some of the storms could be severe.

Antother thing to watch tomorrow is a line of strong to severe storms that will move into West TN tomorrow morning/afternoon. In addition to the scattered showers and storms we’ll likely experience in the afternoon, we’ll have to track this squall line of storms as it advances eastward. If the line holds together, it could pose a severe storm threat to the plateau in the evening.

If you have outdoor plans on Friday, please stay weather aware. Make sure you have easy access to shelter in case a severe storm threatens your area. Damaging winds are the main threat on Friday, though flash flooding, large hail, and frequent lightning are certainly all threats, as well. The tornado threat appears very low.

I’ll have a full update in the morning with the latest!

Storm Threats Increase Friday

Issued June 5 at 2:10 p.m.

Good afternoon! First of all, cloud cover today has helped suppress storms on the plateau. I’ll keep the 30% chance going through the evening, as we could still see a shower or storm on the plateau with heat and humidity levels as they are.

On Friday, threats increase. This heat and humidity here at the surface will find itself underneath an atmosphere that will grow increasingly unstable as we go through the day. The NWS conference call at 1:00 emphasized the damaging wind threat with any storm that forms. Torrential downpours with storms could also lead to localized flash flooding.

The threat timeframe continues to be 3:00-9:00 pm, with the greatest risk likely coming in the 6:00-8:00 timefream. This timing could change a bit, but that has been consistent in the data since yesterday.

One of our more reliable radar models is likely doing a good job showing what radar will look like on Friday. This begins at 10:00 a.m. and ends at 10:00 pm, moving in one-hour increments.

On Saturday, a threat continues but timing is much more uncertain. I’m leading toward an afternoon/evening threat but I’ll keep monitoring that. It just depends on how the front moves through the area Friday night. If it slows up, as fronts often due in June, we have a greater risk for storms on Saturday. If the front moves farther south, we will have a lower risk.

The Storm Prediction Center is highlighting our entire area in severe weather threats for both Friday and Saturday. i’ll keep you posted on their thinking, as well.

You all take care! I’ll continue to monitor things and will issue another special update later this evening with the freshest data!
