Friday Afternoon Update

I wanted to let you know that the NWS has expanded the winter storm watch to now include all of central and eastern Kentucky. The counties closest to the TN/KY border had been left off the watches but they are now included. This is not surprising, as they have always been at the southernmost area of concern for icing. The NWS is erring on the side of caution by adding these southern Kentucky counties and they are right to do so…ice is nothing to mess around with.

While we will escape a crippling ice storm here on the plateau by staying at or under 1/10 inch of ice, you folks north of a line from Livingston to Jamestown to Oneida should be aware that you may get closer to 2/10 (0.20) inch of ice. Power outages begin at about 1/4 (0.25) inch of ice. Keep in mind that colder air may get trapped in some of the valley areas and cause ice to get close to that 0.25″ mark. Keep this in mind if you are in those colder areas of northern Overton, Fentress,or Scott Counties. This would include all of Clay (Celina) and Pickett (Byrdstown) Counties.

The highest impacts for all of us to prepare for include: Hazardous travel Sunday morning, the potential for hazardous travel Monday from snow, and the extended period of very cold temps next week. We will likely experience temps that are below freezing for at least 100 hours straight starting Monday. Prepare those pipes!

On the map below, the yellow box indicates the area of greatest concern for ice accumulations that could approach 0.25 inches before the ice changes to plain rain Sunday morning. The risk of this happening is low, but not zero.

As for the rest of us, high impacts to travel are likely across the plateau Sunday morning. Again, I will have a full special update tonight concerning the winter weather coming Sunday – Monday, as well as a look into the potential winter storm at the end of next week. Lots of new data is coming in over the next few hours and that will really help with the forecast for both Sunday and Monday and the end of next week. You all enjoy the afternoon and I’ll see you tonight!

Other important weather information will be shared when needed. This includes additional severe weather information, model data, drought info, hurricane info, and more. Some of these can be found as tabs to this page at any time.

Forecast Summary

Morning flurries/sleet pellets will come to end areawide by noon today. Light accumulation is possible in some locations.

Saturday will be a cold and calm day (calm before the storm), with clouds increasing toward evening. Those clouds thicken up enough to bring the threat for a light wintry mix Sunday morning. That wintry mix will transition to cold rain by the afternoon as winds increase from the south. Rain continues, heavy at times, Sunday night along with gusty south winds. A rumble of thunder can’t be ruled out.

Colder air moves back into the area behind this system Monday morning on gusty northwesterly winds. This will change any leftover precip to snow, with light accumulations of snowfall is certainly possible.

Stay tuned for forecast updates and please see graphics below for more specific info! I’ll have a special update again tonight to update you on all the latest!

Weather Threats

The low-end threats should end by noon, at the latest, across the region.

Believe it or not, strong storms are not out of the question! I’ll monitor this closely. Severe weather is expected in the Deep South, with Mississippi and Alabama being under the greatest threat, which includes tornadoes for them.

Impacts to travel are likely Sunday morning and again Monday morning. I’ll have a special update again this evening with the latest!

The latest data shows a more favorable track to give us light snow on Monday, so these percentages may increase in tonight’s update.

On This Day

Possible Future Threats to Monitor

Another Gulf low threatens to bring snow to the South on the 9th and 10th. Timing and accumulation amounts are uncertain at this time. Stay tuned.

Scattered Snow Showers for Friday w/ Light Accumulation Possible

Wintry Precip Likely Sunday-Monday With Impacts to Travel

Monitoring the Snow Day Forecast for Monday

Friday

Friday continues to look a bit snowy, especially in the morning hours. Light accumulation is possible. Be safe if you’re out and about. I’m not looking for significant impacts, but any snow that falls could cause some impacts to area roads.

Any snow accumulation should stay on the light side.

I increased the threat a bit more, in light of new data that shows a bit more moisture for the system to work with. Still, impacts and accumulation will be light across the region.

Sunday – Monday

Ahhh….and now for the big weather newsmaker…

Winter storm watches now stretch from Kansas to Kentucky. Those will be upgraded to warnings as we get closer to the event. Significant snow and ice will fall on those areas.

As for us, impacts to travel could be quite high Sunday morning. The earlier the precip moves in, the greater the glaze of ice will be. I continue to believe, as I have from the beginning, that this will NOT be an icestorm for the plateau. This is unlikely to be a significant snow, as well. HOWEVER, a glaze of ice on the roads Sunday morning could make travel very dangerous.

Then, by noon on Sunday we should be warm enough for rain as intense warm air advection kicks in. Believe it or not, severe weather is expected in Mississippi on Sunday! Warm air will be really close to our south and cold air will be really close to our north. As is often the case, we’re sandwiched in the middle and expecting the majority of the precip to fall as rain. We may even hear a rumble of thunder! Heavy rainfall is possible Sunday evening.

Then, sometime after midnight Sunday the rain will change to snow as colder air rushes back in. Light snow accumulation is certainly possible. It just depends on how much moisture is left over and that is still in question.

I’ll continue to monitor all of this very closely.

This continues to be my graphic that I’ve shared for days now.

Stay tuned for updates to the snow forecast for Monday! Moisture behind our big storm system will bring some light snow to the area. Then, we’ll likely see another round of light snow Monday night from a disturbance. Stay tuned.

Snow Day Forecast

Stay tuned to updates to this, as well!

Five Day Forecast

I’ll have this updated in the morning.

Monitoring Threats Beyond the 5-Day

The January 9-10 timeframe still looks very intersting for the potential for a significant snow event in the South. There’s still plenty of time to monitor this, but just keep this in the back of your mind. Even colder air will likely move in behind this storm.

Forecast Summary

Partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies will be with us for our Thursday. It’s a rather pleasant day, albeit a bit chilly. Clouds increase overnight and that leads to a chance for flurries and snow showers for Friday. Light accumulation is possible. Winds will be gusty from the northwest on Friday, making it feel much colder.
