The winter storm warning is for Saturday & Sunday

Winter Storm Warning
This midday update is to let you all know that confidence is increasing even more for an ice storm for our area. This update reflects that. Overall, my forecast snow and ice totals remain the same but now I am in good company with the NWS agreeing. Still, ice amounts are the most trivial part of this forecast. If precip takes longer to transition to rain Saturday night, ice totals could be closer to 3/4 inch. I feel most confident with 1/4 – 1/2 inch ice totals across the plateau. I’m also now constructing a more hourly timeline for this event and this is reflected in this update, as well.

This is subject to change but my confidence is solid enough to start sharing this with you all. Wintry precip will develop across the region Saturday morning. It will take a while for the surface air to moisten up, but initial precip should be sleet and snow mixed.

For this update, I have increased the threat for dangerously cold temps. That comes Sunday night. Also, keep in mind that sleet accumulates on roads and the ground, not trees and powerlines. So, it’s good in that it just bounces off objects. It’s bad in that it creates a solid block of ice on roads and the ground. There continue to be indications of very heavy sleet, some of which could accumulate to an inch or more.

As the diagram states, I can’t completely rule out 3/4 of an inch of ice, but 1/4 – 1/2 seems to be the most reasonable forecast at this time. Stay tuned.

This is not our dream snow, snow lovers. Some of you all may get up to an inch or so of snow at the onset of precip Saturday, but I still think our best for snow showers with light accumulation ( up to 2″?) will come Sunday when precip changes back to snow and northwest flow snow kicks in. In future updates, I may separte my thoughts on snow from the onset to the finish.

Please stay tuned for additional special updates! Confidence is increasing that this will indeed be a very impactful winter storm for our area.
