2:30 Sunday Update: Temps Starting to Drop

Issued Sunday at 2:30 pm, January 25, 2026

Temps Plunging This Afternoon, w/ Refreezing a Real Concern Tonight, Along with Additional Light Wintry Precip

In effect Sunday night through Tuesday morning.

Update

The drop in temps is right on schedule, with local weather stations starting to see those falling temps. My thermometer has gone from 41° to 37° (10 mi north of Crossville) in the past hour. Look for temps to continue to fall through the evening and night. We’re a long way from that overnight low of 9°.

Speaking of which, keep in mind that any standing water tonight will freeze solid. That could make for some hazardous roads out there, so please be careful.

Be careful with the dangerously cold temps, as well. It stays dangerously cold tomorrow and tomorrow night.

As for precip, the bulk of the precip is indeed moving out, just as the colder air is coming back. However, light wintry precip is still possible this evening and even overnight, with a glaze of ice possible. That won’t cause issues with trees and powerlines, but it will impact travel. After dark, we should see more of a snow flurry/snow shower threat. Accumulation is expected to stay at or under an inch.

Rapidly dropping temps lead to rapid freezing of water on the ground and roads (ie flash freezing). The ground is cold and it won’t take long for it to freeze solid. What a muddy mess we’ll have when this ever thaws out!

You all stay safe and stay home if you can. Several have asked about morning travel…I would just say be mindful of ice that will likely be on many roads. With highs only in the teens tomorrow, those issues will likely persist all day.

I am a bit more concerned about freezing drizzle this evening and tonight. That stuff is often too light and below the radar beam to be seen on radar. That stuff is horrible about producing black ice. I’ll monitor that threat. With as much moisture as we have, along with rapidly falling temps, I can foresee that being an issue on the plateau.

I’ll issue additional updates, as needed! Thank you all for trusting me with your weather! As complex as this system has been (is there any such thing as “not complex” wintry weather here? lol), the forecast has stayed pretty much on track. I’ll have an interesting follow-up after this is all over. It’s been an interesting storm!

You all take care!
