Temps Plunging This Evening, w/ Refreezing Occurring, Along with Additional Light Snow

Update
Temps are falling and so are the snowflakes! It’s snowing nicely at my house north of Crossville. Scattered areas of light snow can be expected through the evening. The flakes are small but they are pretty (in my opinion)….they’re also going to make the roads slick again, along with any water that’s on them that will freeze tonight.
This rapid transition to snow is actually good news. This means the threat for any sleet has diminished. Freezing drizzle is certainly still possible, which can create a thin coat of ice on surfaces and roadways (ie black ice). The warm nose that we had aloft has moved east.
Radar shows more light snow across Middle TN moving our way. Some of it, as usual, will be below the radar beam and won’t show up on radar. I’ve already gotten several questions about that (you sure can tell you subscribes to my updates and who doesn’t. LOL!). Accumulations of snow with this activity are still expected to be light and in the “one inch or less” category.
I’m assuming you all have heard or learned more about the “warm nose” than you ever cared to over the past few days. LOL This morning’s weather balloon launch from the NWS Nashville showed it up very nicely. This is the stuff that makes for some awesome meteorology classroom discussions. The bottom line is the surface, where the balloon is launched. It gathers temp data on its way up into the sky (red line). Temps increases from left to write on the bottom line (x-axis). Notice how temps are cold when the balloon lifts, but then the temp line cuts hard to the right (increasing temps). Those temps rose to around 50° just a few thousand feet off the ground! On the plateau, we were both “up in” the warmer air aloft and we had warm air moving in from the south.
Incidentally, these warm noses are extremely common. Our storm was not unique for its nose. ha

The NWS is issuing advisories warning of the cold temps to come over the next several days. Adding some wind to those temps will cause the “feels like” temp to be about 10 degrees or more below the actual temp.
The latest power outage map shows that much of area has had power restored. Can you tell where the ice storm was the worst today? Look at all those power outages across western Middle TN! I sure feel sorry for those folks.

You all stay warm and stay home if you can. And thank you for trusting me with your weather!
