Severe Weather Awareness Week
Today’s topic is severe thunderstorms. A severe thunderstorm is defined as having winds greater than 58 mph and/or hail that is at least one inch in diameter. Keep in mind that the straight-line winds of severe thunderstorms can exceed 100 mph and do the damage that a weak tornado would do. Please take all severe thunderstorms seriously and treat them like tornado warnings, especially since severe storms can produce tornadoes with little or no warning.

Weather Summary
Today will be the warmest day of the week, with highs reaching into the mid to upper 70s. Once the morning showers move out, warm southerly breezes will help get temps into the 70s. A mix of sun and clouds is expected today (similar to yesterday).
The next best chance for rain comes Saturday, when much of the plateau should pick up some rainfall. Those rain chances fall off for Sunday, before picking back up Monday with a more powerful storm system.
The storm system that will bring us rain and storms on Monday will likely produce significant severe weather across the southern plains. This is a bit early for them, but their peak severe weather season, like ours, begins in March. Those big storms will weaken as they move east, but we may still have a risk for a strong or even severe storm from that system. We are not currently highlighted in any threat by the Storm Prediction Center, but I’ll keep ya posted!
There continues to be no significant cold air in sight.
