1:10 a.m. Update

UPDATE

You folks in Overton, Pickett, and Fentress counties are looking much better. Yes, you have heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and lightning moving through your areas, but the severe threat has definitely lowered. I’ll keep watching that, though.

You folks in Putnam County are also looking pretty good right now, though a strong storm moving through the Baxter will need to be watched.

The most concerning area continues to be southern Cumberland County. Many of you have probably been watching the storm near Woodbury with the off and on again tornado warnings. We’ll keep tracking that storm eastward. I expect it to be near Cumberland County by 2:00 a.m. A severe t-storm warning was just issued for White County (Sparta) until 2:00 a.m., so that would be right on schedule with my thinking. The tornado warning near Woodbury has just been dropped yet again, but it could be reissued (it’s a good sign that the tornado warnings on that storm are being cancelled earlier more frequently now).

It’s also a good sign that the newest severe t-storm warning is for 60 mph winds. Earlier, storms were being warned for 70 mph winds. Yet another good sign.

Some rain has impacted northern Cumberland County but many of you in southern Cumberland remain dry. This storm may ride the boundary between those two airmasses (or just south of the boundary). That could help it maintain severity. It’s just something to watch. The good news is that I haven’t seen any confirmed tornado damage with that storm.

I’m watching it all closely!

A tornado watch is in effect until 3:00 a.m. for the Cumberland Plateau.

Stay tuned for updates through the night.
