MM News

Yesterday, I was at Allardt Elementary and the air conditioning was broken in the library where I ws to speak (it was very warm. ha). Then, soon after starting my talk, the main water line broke. That prompted the closing of the school and an abrupt end to my talk. haha

This morning, I’m headed to South Fentress to talk to a LOT of kiddos about weather and space. Wish me luck! ha

Weather Headlines

Forecast trending hotter & drier through the start of next week

Forecast Discussion

The cold front that we’ve been tracking for several days (it’s slow!) has now slowed even more in the model data. Now, it may be the middle of next week before we get good rainfall from it. This isn’t uncommon behavior for summer fronts, but it can make long-range forecasting difficult. It’ll get here someday. haha

Almanac for Yesterday

Tropics

Good news from the tropics this morning! The area of low pressure that we’ve been watching near the Caribbean has dissipated. The area of low pressure near Africa is not looking nearly as healthy as it looked yesterday, therefore the National hurricane Center has now lowered its chances for development.

1749 – A general fasting was called on account of drought in Massachusetts. It was the year of the famous dry spring in which fields and villages burned.

Yesterday’s National Temperature Extremes

High:  113° at Death Valley, California

Low:   32° at Saranac Lake, New York

Today’s Tennessee Weather

A hot and humid day is in store for the Volunteer State today. That humidity may lead to a couple of afternoon and evening showers or storms across West Tennessee. Otherwise, look for mostly sunny skies and highs near 90 for many of us.

Tonight’s Tennessee Weather

A few passing clouds and a Full Moon will be in our Tennessee skies for tonight. It will be a mild and muggy night, with lows in the 60s and 70s.

Tomorrow’s Tennessee Weather

Saturday is nearly a carbon copy of Friday’s weather. Another hot and humid day, with just a slight chance for an afternoon shower or storm across West Tennessee. The rest of us will see another dry and mostly sunny day.

Full Moon Rising

I just notice the Full Moon rising and it’s an incredible sight! This month’s Full Moon is called the Strawberry Moon.

Whatever the name, it sure is beautiful! There are a few clouds around and they are making the scene even more beautiful.

This is the first Full Moon of summer 2021.

I took this picture at about 8:40, just as I notice the Moon was rising. My picture does not do it justice.

Almanac for Yesterday

Tropics

The area of low pressure nearest to the Caribbean is still holding on and it still needs to be watched. While it only has a 10% chance of development, that chance is not zero.

Of even more interest is an area of low pressure near Africa. While it is rather uncommon to see a storm develop in that region this early in the season, there are strong indications that this system has a good chance of becoming a storm and certainly bears watching over the next couple of weeks. The chance for development is set at 40%.

1924 – Six men at a rock quarry south of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, sought shelter from a thunderstorm. The structure chosen contained a quantity of dynamite. Lightning struck a near-by tree causing the dynamite to explode. The men were killed instantly.

Yesterday’s National Temperature Extremes

High:  109° at Tucumcari, New Mexico & Rio Grande Village, Texas

Low:   26° at Bodie, California

Thirsty Thursday

Frozen water is about 9% lighter than liquid water, which is why ice floats.

Today’s Tennessee Weather

Tennessee’s skies will be filled with sunshine and a few passing clouds today. Afternoon high temperatures will top out in the mid to upper 80s. Humidity will be a bit higher than what we’ve seen this week, but it should still feel pretty good outside for this time of year.

Tonight’s Tennessee Weather

Tonight’s Full Moon will be greeted by just a few passing clouds. That often makes the Full Moon look even more beautiful! It will be a warm and muggy night for stargazing in both West and Middle Tennessee, with temperatures holding in the low to mid 70s for much of the night. Meanwhile, the Cumberland Plateau and East Tennessee will see a more pleasant night, with overnight low temperatures around 60 degrees.

Tomorrow’s Tennessee Weather

Humidity increases a bit more for Friday, making it feel more like a Tennessee summer day! That increasing humidity could lead to an isolated shower or storm for West Tennessee, while the rest of us just see a few passing cumulus clouds.

Wednesday Weather 101

Everything carries some degree of electrical charge. The Earth itself is negatively charged, but when a thunderstorm moves overhead, that charge flips to positive. The water in the base of the thunderstorm’s clouds is negatively charged. When enough of an imbalance occurs between the two, a lightning strike occurs!

Today’s Tennessee Weather

It’s an absolutely beautiful June day in Tennessee! Look for mostly sunny skies, low humidity, and highs in the low to mid 80s. Be sure and get outside if you can!

Tonight’s Tennessee Weather

It’s the perfect night to step outside and admire that nearly-Full Moon and those starry skies! Look for pleasant overnight lows around 60 degrees for most of us.

Tomorrow’s Tennessee Weather

Winds switch back around from the south on Thursday. Those light southerly breezes will bring warmer temperatures and higher humidity levels. That extra warmth and humidity will bring a few passing clouds for most, while you folks in West Tennessee may even see an isolated afternoon shower or storm.

Drought Monitor

The drought monitor is updated each Thursday. The new update will be out tomorrow!

This graphic shows the percentage of homes with the most (left) and least (right) air conditioners. With a major heat wave coming this week, Seattle folks are going to be rethinking that air conditioner. Temps will likely top 100 degrees there this week, which is quite unusual! This heat wave is expected to be historic. Sound familiar? It’s because “historic” heat waves are becoming more and more common.

In June of 1915, NASA’s predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) hired their first employee, John Victory! Many comment that NACA had its first victory that year (ha). He helped develop working relationships with Congress, the military, and the aerospace industry during NACA’s early years. I would love to have met this gentleman!
